The Yes Men fix the world – recommended movie

Activist and comedy hero Andy Bichlbaum on live BBC News 24 as "spokesperson" for Dow Chemicals

BBC breaks the news that Dow Chemicals accepts responsibility for the Union Carbide accident at Bhopal, India

During the Bioneers conference in San Francisco, we were treated to a regional launch screening of the just-released Yes Men movie – due for general release later this month. I give this one a 10/10. Apparently Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno are heroes of 3 worlds: comedy, media and activism. It’s a laugh-out loud documentary where you witness their own recordings of their brilliant, elaborate hoaxes. These two are “on a mission to speak the truth for governments and corporations that don’t do so”.

Seen here are screen shots of their most high profile ‘prank’ where Andy pretended to be a senior spokesperson from Dow Chemicals announcing a world exclusive live on BBC News 24 to 300 million viewers, that Dow would at last pay compensation to the victims of Bhopal, the largest industrial accident in history. It was the 20th anniversary of the disaster and Andy also stated that Union Carbide, the company responsible for the atrocity which Dow had purchased, would now be closed down.

Two billions dollars was wiped off the share price in 23 minutes. As Andy later pointed out the markets punish corporations if they try to make good the damage they have wrought!  They were exposed as hoaxsters and then accepted an invitation for an interview with Jon Snow on Channel 4 news. What did they have to say about their lies? Andy said they were giving “an honest representation of what the world should be doing”.

Some other great quotes from the movie:

  • on Halliburton – “a world leader in extracting profit from disasters”
  • on their spoof edition of the New York Times with the news that they wanted to read in the future: “If a few people at the top can make bad news happen, then why can’t a lot at the bottom make good news happen?”
  • Of the announcement in New Orleans that social housing which is currently being withdrawn and sold to private developers stopping the poor from returning to New Orleans, would now be given back to the poor: “This is actually truth telling where there would normally be lies”.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
see the schedule of where the movie is opening and playing. The DVD is available soon.

Sometimes it takes a lie to expose the truth
